What is the aftercare for Plastibell (ring) Circumcision?

Updated: Dec 19, 2022

The Plastibell (ring) will take 3-14 days to come off. In the meantime, you will need to do the following:

Avoid friction – we advise that you hold your son flat and not against your body. If he is old enough to walk, then he can walk normally. Friction, like with any surgery, can lead to bleeding.

Apply Vaseline on the nappy at every nappy change. We show the parents how to do this after the circumcision. Again, this soothes the penis and avoids friction between the penis and the nappy. If your son wears underwear, we will show you how he can still wear his underwear and how to apply Vaseline.

Bath your son every day, once or twice. You can bath your son using baby shampoo or by adding salt the water and immersing the penis in the water. This will keep the penis clean during the healing process.

A few days after the circumcision, it is normal to see swelling, redness and have a bad smell coming from the dead skin. Bathing your son daily will reduce from this bad smell.

If the ring does not come off after 14 days, you will need to make an appointment for ring removal. This is usually very simple and takes less than 1 minute.

In our clinic, we give our patients a thorough aftercare sheet with more information and photos to follow. We are also available through our 24/7 emergency line.
